Know the Flag (“the App”) is a free, ad-free flag guessing game. No sign-up is required. Levels, Learn and Explore work completely offline. We never ask for your location, your contacts, or your advertising identifier.
Information that stays on your device
Your settings — language, sound and vibration — are stored only on your device and are never sent to any server.
Anonymous identity and your display name
The first time you use an online feature (Duel or the leaderboards), an anonymous identity is created automatically. It asks for no name and no email: it is a randomly generated number and does not identify you as a person.
You are also given a random display name such as “Atlas4821”, which you can change at any time. Your display name is public: your opponent sees it during a duel and other players see it on the leaderboard. For that reason we recommend not using your real name or anything else that identifies you.
Duel mode
Duel is an optional mode where you race another player online. When you play a duel, the following is sent to our server:
- Your anonymous identity, display name and avatar choice
- The game mode, the answers you give, and your score
- A version signature of the country list in your app, so you are matched with a compatible opponent
This data is used to match you with an opponent, calculate your score and build the leaderboard. Matchmaking records are deleted within a few minutes and match records within 7 days.
Duels have no chat, no messaging and no profile pages. Players see only each other’s display name, avatar and score — nothing else is shared.
Your avatar
An avatar is either a country code or the key of a built-in symbol — never a photo and never free text. The image itself lives inside the app on your device; only your choice is stored on the server.
Backing up your game progress
Your stars, badges and game statistics — such as how many questions you have answered and how accurate you are — are backed up on our server, linked to your anonymous identity. The only purpose is to restore your progress when you change phones.
This backup is game data; it contains nothing about who you are.
Linking with Apple (optional)
If you don’t want to lose your progress, you can link your identity to your Apple account. This is entirely optional — no feature depends on it. Without linking you can still play, change your name and appear on the leaderboard.
When you link, Apple sends us a user identifier and, if you allow it, an email address. If you use Apple’s “Hide My Email” option we never see your real address. This information is used only to connect you to the same account on a new device. It is not used for marketing, and we do not send you email.
Where data is stored, and third parties
All data is stored on our own server, operated by the App’s developer. There is no advertising network, no analytics tool and no tracking code of any kind in the App. Your data is never sold and never shared with third parties.
Children’s privacy
The App is suitable for users of all ages and we do not request contact details from children. Because Duel has no chat or messaging, there is no way to communicate with strangers.
One thing to be aware of: display names are public. Children should not use their real name, their school, or any other identifying detail as a display name. Inappropriate names are filtered, and reported names are removed.
Your rights
You can delete your account from inside the app: open Profile → Delete Account. This permanently removes your display name, duel history, leaderboard place and progress backup from the server. It cannot be undone.
If you would like a copy of your data, or have any other request, write to us at the address below.
Changes to this policy
